Showing empathy towards others

A batch mate who is also a friend called me yesterday after more than 10 years. We spoke for sometime catching up on what was happening in our lives.

RP: Are you still devoted to Lord Krishna. He was your favorite god and you were so religious
Me: Huh.. nope. I don't believe in religion anymore and am actually inclined towards atheism. I was naïve all those years. Realized my mistake.
RP : Oh. Are you still single
Me: yes
RP: Great. Am jealous of you. You must be enjoying your life right now. Very lucky.
*she laughs on the phone
Me: hmm. whenever any married person tells me this, I just ask them a simple question - would you like to trade places with me?
*she is silent for a few seconds. I guess she did not expect this reply from me.
RP: oh. I guess grass seems greener on the other side.

I was not being cynical here. If someone had told this to me when I was in my twenties, I would have laughed with them. But at this age, when I am going to be 40 in a few months, this really irritates me.

I mean seriously how do you know that Iam enjoying my life. Did I ever tell you that.

Why is it difficult for people to be empathetic towards others. When you make a joke at someone's expense, just take some time to think on what situation they are in. Iam not expecting you to help me or listen to my problems, just refrain from saying such things. Do you know the pain I go through everyday.

This is not the first time someone had laughed at me and told me how lucky I was. Sadly, this will not be the last time as well.
